“The fattest and most scrumptious
of all flowers,
a rare fusion of fluff and majesty,
the peony is now coming into bloom.”
–Henry Mitchell

Peonies are outrageously beautiful
in bloom, with lush foliage all summer long,
a perennial that may live longer than we do
some have been known to thrive for 100 years.
Like me, require little maintenance
as long as we are planted properly,
establishing ourselves; not responding well
to transplanting, but when do, we flourish
with our roots established, we are there forever.
Peonies take my breath away every spring,
They’re hardy and grow well as far south
In most of the country in Europe too.
The rules for success are simply full sun
and well-drained soil, even relish cold winters,
much need chilling for bud formation.
A lovely low hedge its stunning in bloom,
bushy clump of handsome glossy green leaves
lasts all summer long, then turns in the fall,
a stately and dignified as any shrub.

Oh, peonies are the most heavenly flowers, but so hard to get to bloom in the South. I so wish I could get them and lilacs to bloom.
