Requiescat

Requiescat
by Oscar Wilde

Tread lightly, she is near
Under the snow,
Speak gently, she can hear
The daisies grow.

All her bright golden hair
Tarnished with rust,
She that was young and fair
Fallen to dust.

Lily-like, white as snow,
She hardly knew
She was a woman, so
Sweetly she grew.

Coffin-board, heavy stone,
Lie on her breast,
I vex my heart alone,
She is at rest.

Peace, Peace, she cannot hear
Lyre or sonnet,
All my life’s buried here,
Heap earth upon it.

  1. Oscar Wilde is one of my favorites. His life was a train wreck at times but he produced some very elegant poetry. Love the image you selected. Silly wee Willy Nilly would lose his mind as cats and butterflies are his best friends and heart’s desire.

    • Hey Willy…He may certainly the “bad boy” of poetry and literature. He was flamboyant at a time when polite society was prim and proper. Famous for his disdain for dull and dulling conformity, as his wit has proven. But this is a wonderful poem and it proves that he was also a true poet.
